Tian Tan Buddha

Tian Tan Buddha

The Big Buddha (Tian Tan)

The Big Buddha is a bronze statue of 34 meters in height and 250 tons located at the top of Ngong Ping, the highest part of the island of Lantau.

The construction of the statue ended on December 28, 1993, becoming the largest sitting Buddha representation in the world. It consists of 202 pieces of bronze.

The Great Buddha is an extension of the Po Lin Monastery and symbolizes the union of man with nature. The statue is based on a lotus leaf and is surrounded by small statues of gods representing immortality.

To climb to the statue we will have to overcome the 268 steps that separate it from the ground. Once above, besides enjoying the magnificent views, we can access the interior of the statue to see the permanent exhibition. The price of the entrance is very low, but in spite of this we believe that it is not worth entering.

The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car is the best way to get to the mountain as it is possible to enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, the mountains and the city during the 25-minute drive from Tung Chung.

It is also possible to get on bus number 23 but, although it is a cheaper option, it does not have the beautiful views of the cable car and it takes longer to arrive due to the poor condition of the road.
